Chapter 940 37: The Previous Generation’s Grudges and Love
As Ivan leafed through the documents, Jimmy explained, "Lia Aiken's background is actually tied to the love entanglements of the previous generation. Lia's mother was originally her uncle's girlfriend, but ended up marrying Tom Aiken. Tom truly loved his original wife, and their relationship was good after marriage."
"However, Tom's brother couldn't stand to see the couple happy together and resented Tom for inheriting the family business. Because Tom was managing the Aiken Group, he was very busy and couldn't spend much time with his wife after marriage. This led to his wife rekindling an old relationship with his brother. It's mainly because of his brother's schemes—he first drugged his sister-in-law and then, once she was confused, they did everything they shouldn't have."
Ivan furrowed his brow.
Jimmy continued, "They were originally a couple, so even after breaking up, when they got together again, their feelings reignited quickly, and they continued the affair. Later, Mrs. Aiken got pregnant, and the child born was Lia. But whether Lia was Tom's or her ex-boyfriend's, Mrs. Aiken herself wasn't sure. She didn't dare to take her daughter for a paternity test. Fortunately, her daughter resembled her, so Tom didn't suspect anything."
"Before the affair was exposed, Tom doted on Lia immensely, treating her like the apple of his eye, unlike now, using her as a pawn. He doted on Lia because he really loved his former wife."
"When Lia was six, Mrs. Aiken's affair with her ex-boyfriend and brother-in-law was exposed, caught red-handed by Tom. Mrs. Aiken thought it was just bad luck being caught but didn't know that her brother-in-law had secretly installed cameras in the room. The photos you received were taken then, and it was the opponent who sent the photos to Tom, revealing to him that his beloved wife had cheated with his own brother."
Ivan's face turned grim, his sword-like eyebrows knitted tightly.
Jimmy spoke while Ivan finished reading.
However, listening to Jimmy recount it brought up a different feeling.
"After being caught red-handed, Mrs. Aiken couldn't bear the shame and guilt towards Tom, so she ended her own life. Meanwhile, his brother-in-law fled. During that time, Tom was grieving over his suicidal wife and didn't notice his brother's absence. By the time he snapped out of it, his brother was long gone."
"Betrayed by both his wife and brother, Tom was deeply hurt. His pain turned his love for his former wife into hatred. Especially after he took Lia for a paternity test and found out she was his brother's daughter, his hatred grew, and his attitude towards Lia changed drastically. Over the years, he transferred his hatred of his late wife onto Lia, treating her very poorly, almost to the point of abuse."
Tom did not kill Lia, probably due to some remaining father-daughter feelings. After all, before she turned six, he did cherish Lia like a precious gemstone.
Ivan put down the documents, which also mentioned that Tom's brother had secretly appeared again after Tom took Lia for the paternity test. He asked Jimmy, "Is the paternity test result genuine? Could it be fake?"
Jimmy suspected it might be fake too.
Ultimately, the breakdown in relationship between Tom and Lia was caused by his brother.
The brother, due to not inheriting the family business, was envious of his brother and personally destroyed his brother's happiness and family, not even sparing Lia.
Judging by how Ivan had just shown interest in Lia and then received that delivery, it's clear Tom's brother has been secretly watching the Aiken family, possibly even taking pleasure in Tom's ill-treatment of Lia.
Now, seeing the possibility of Lia finding happiness, he couldn't help but act again.
All indications lead Ivan to suspect that Lia is actually Tom's biological daughter, but the paternity result back then was swapped to cause Tom to misunderstand and take it out on Lia, ensuring Lia's life remained difficult.
The man lurking in the shadows is truly vicious, holding a grudge for over twenty years, still refusing to let Tom and Lia have peace.
"Big brother, I think that result is likely fake."
Ivan agreed, though his brow remained furrowed, "Has that man been found?"
"I've sent people to find him, and I believe we'll catch him soon."
Ivan nodded, "Once he's caught, have both brothers do a paternity test with Lia to finally determine whose daughter she is. For now, let's not alert Tom and Lia."
If Lia were to learn about the rift in her parents' relationship, considering her feelings for her late mother, she likely wouldn't be able to handle it.
Lia is not weak, but over the years, she's been suppressed by Tom and unable to move. This is because Tom brings up her late mother, showing Lia holds her mother dearly.
No one easily accepts discovering their mother was that kind of person.
If Lia is indeed Tom's biological daughter, yet they act like enemies, knowing the truth might only lead to their collapse.
"Big brother, I will keep quiet for now." Jimmy promised to keep it a secret.
Ivan thanked him, then picked up the documents, stood up, and said, "I'll head home first." At this hour, his mother was probably still awake; Ivan wanted to discuss it with her.
There was someone lurking who couldn't stand to see Lia well. Ivan had to warn his parents to avoid affecting his future with Lia.
Jimmy stood to see him off.
A few minutes later, Ivan drove away.
He made it home in record time.
Upon entering, he asked the servant who opened the door, "When did madam go to bed?"
"Madam just went to bed, she should still be awake."
Ivan acknowledged with a sound.
He drove into the large garage, parked, grabbed the documents, and quickly headed inside, rushing upstairs to his parents' room, where he knocked on the door.
"Dad, Mom, are you awake?"
Still lying down but not yet asleep, Julia nudged Glades, "It's Ivan. It's late, and he's knocking. It must be urgent." She then called to her son, "We haven't slept yet, Ivan. Wait a moment, Mom will get the door for you."
As Glades sat up, he grumbled, "Can't it wait until morning?"
Since that boy matured, he rarely disturbed his parents' rest at night.
Glades was quite displeased at being disturbed so late.
"Just sleep, I'll get the door," Julia offered, heading to open it, "so you won't complain."
Glades pursed his lips, stopped grumbling.
Julia opened the door, letting her son in. They sat on the sofa outside the bedroom, noticing the file in Ivan's hand. Julia asked first, "Ivan, did something happen at the company?"
It must be significant, otherwise, her son wouldn't knock so late.
