Chapter 116 Hostage Exchange
Chapter 116 Hostage Exchange
Time flies.
When the Parker brothers, dressed in Spider-Man suits and carrying the Iron X Element and three charms, appeared in the abandoned church as Kingpin had requested, this was a significant event.
As Riley had expected, Tru had already been waiting there with a large number of ninja soldiers.
"Hey, big guy, it's been a while! It's so nice to see you... Oh, you look thinner. Have you been eating poorly lately? What do you think of my suggestion from the plane? Join District 13, and every Wednesday you get free donuts—eat as much as you want!"
Seeing the familiar face before him, Riley hesitated for a moment before adopting an overly friendly demeanor. He greeted Tru while leisurely moving closer to him.
Clearly, this was the same explanation given to Sheriff Black and his men when they returned on Tru's plane with Banner.
Riley, a modern-day Jia Xu (a legendary strategist known for his cunning and cunning), wouldn't let any opportunity slip by. He deliberately used this half-truthful rhetoric to sow discord between Valmont and Tru.
"Hmph, I have no idea what nonsense you're spouting... Stand right there and don't move! Take one more step and I'll kill you!"
Of course, the honest and simple-minded Tru failed to see Riley's sinister intentions.
But Tru, emboldened by Spider-Man's growing fame, dared not let Riley get any closer and spoke up to stop him. Before Riley could complain, Tru invoked John Jameson's name as a hostage, threatening him with each word carefully enunciated.
"Alright, Tru, my old friend, don't get agitated, I won't go."
However, what Tru didn't know was that his behavior, to a smart person, was more like a sign of guilt, a tacit admission that he had received Riley's offer to recruit him.
So much so that Riley stopped and raised his hands, indicating that he would cooperate obediently.
But beneath that feignedly affectionate response, Riley's true face, hidden behind the mask, already revealed the same meme-worthy expression as in "Plan a Month".
"However, being so far away, how am I supposed to deliver what you want to you? Besides, I've already shown my sincerity; shouldn't you also show some respect, at least let me see how Mr. John Jameson, whom you invited as a guest, is doing now?"
"...That's simple. We deliver the goods and the person on the same day. It's fair and just."
Even though he had a vague feeling that the black Spider-Man in front of him had ill intentions, Tru couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief after the other obediently stopped approaching him.
He then raised his hand and waved it lightly, signaling the ninja soldiers to make way. He pushed John Jameson, who was sitting in a wheelchair, to Tru's side and arranged for one of the ninja soldiers to step forward and make contact with Riley in Tru's place.
Once Riley confirmed John Jameson's safety, he didn't say anything more to test Tru's patience.
He obediently handed over the TiO2 element, along with the Chicken Talisman, Ox Talisman, and Snake Talisman he possessed, to the ninja soldier, allowing him to take these four items and disappear into the shadows.
Tru, without hesitation, issued another order, instructing the ninja soldiers to push John Jameson slowly toward Riley.
For a moment, the atmosphere between the two sides, which should have been tense, became inexplicably harmonious.
But just as the ninja soldier was pushing the wheelchair and about to hand John Jameson to Riley, Riley's spider-sense suddenly activated without warning.
So Riley didn't bother to take this opportunity to try and poach Valon's employees.
He quickly launched his spider silk, dragging John Jameson onto his shoulder, and then, carrying John Jameson, leaped up and landed lightly on the church beam.
At the same time, a dart, flying from the shadows, pierced the ninja soldier's head. It smashed him into a cloud of black smoke, continuing its trajectory without slowing down. Just then, with a narrow escape, it grazed John Jameson's foot and embedded itself deeply in the floor!
It seems that everything turned out alright.
Riley knew in his heart that if he had hesitated for even a fraction of a second, John Jameson, still confined to his wheelchair, would have been killed instantly in front of Riley, his head blown off and beyond saving even with life-saving potions!
That wasn't all. Seeing that his sneak attack had missed, the thug who had been secretly attacking still showed no sign of stopping. Instead, he intensified his attack, instantly throwing a handful of darts straight at John Jameson on Riley's shoulder!
To protect John Jameson, Riley had no choice but to abandon any thought of retaliating and, while carrying Jameson, constantly use his agility to dodge the darts thrown at him from tricky angles. Meanwhile, his tone turned cold as he sneered at Tru.
"Fine, Tru, after trusting you so much... I've already handed over what you wanted, and you still want to kill the hostages! Is this how the Mafia operates?!"
"No, this wasn't arranged by our Black Hand Gang."
However, this series of offensives was clearly out of character for the Black Hand Gang, which was always after money and rarely took the lives of others, especially innocent people.
So much so that Tru, looking completely bewildered, answered Riley's question just like an honest man.
He squinted and looked in the direction of the attack, trying to see who had the audacity to tarnish the reputation of the Mafia!
"Don't be nervous, Spider-Man, I was just saying hello... If you can't even dodge an attack of this magnitude, I should suspect that you're some desperate J. Jonah Jameson who, in order to save his precious son, just found someone to wear this clown costume and impersonate him."
Fortunately, seeing that the multiple attacks had failed to harm Riley in the slightest, the person who launched the sneak attack knew that continuing the pursuit would only thoroughly enrage Spider-Man and yield no results.
After the attack ceased, a stranger dressed in simple clothes with only a target icon drawn on his forehead emerged from the shadows with a large group of armed thugs.
The next second, the armed thugs, who quickly dispersed, blocked all the entrances and exits of the church, cutting off the Parker brothers' escape route.
The man then licked his lips and, with a sickly, sinister look in his eyes, sized up the Parker brothers. He seemed confident of victory, as if the two famous superheroes before him were nothing more than lambs to the slaughter, and deliberately adopted a hypocritical gentlemanly demeanor, continuing to speak slowly and deliberately.
"Hello, Spider-Man, my name is Bullseye. Mr. Kingpin, please give my greetings to you..."
"By the way, let me introduce you to a few old friends who have undergone a complete transformation."
